It's All About The Images
Television stars get awarded at Friday night's NAACP Image Awards but hostility is still brewing between the networks and the civil rights organization
By George Alexander
Tonight on Fox-TV, the NAACP will present its 33rd annual Image Awards, honoring African American achievement in film, TV, music, and literature. The organization will also present special awards to legendary singer, Little Richard, national security advisor, Condoleezza Rice, and cartoonist Aaron McGruder. But all is not well in Hollywood: Despite an era that some call a "Golden Age" for black actors, when it comes to work behind the scenes, blacks, and other minorities still lament about a lack of representation. A recent Directors Guild of America (DGA) report released in January, indicates there is no diversity among television executives.
Kweisi Mfume
Two years ago, the NAACP led a coalition of other civil rights organizations in negotiating diversity agreements with the four major television networks -- CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox. According to NAACP president and CEO, Kweisi Mfume, progress in reaching diversity objectives has been slow: "It's my belief that this effort to create opportunities for qualified men and women in network television, both in front of and behind the camera, continues to move at a snail's pace. "
The DGA report issued in January indicates that out of the top forty primetime drama and comedy television series, white males directed 80% of the episodes (663), with African Americans receiving a meager 3% (27) of the directing jobs, Latinos 2% (15) and Asian Americans only 1% (11). "The DGA report underscores the ongoing problem that continues to exist with respect to writers, actors, publicists, and other industry personnel," argues Mfume.
According to the report, series like "Friends" and "Law and Order" hired no females and no minorities during the evaluated period. Spokespersons for Warner Bros. ("Friends") and Studio USA ("Law and Order") declined to comment.
In examining the overall issue of workplace diversity, Jonathon Segal, an attorney with the Philadelphia-based firm of Wolf, Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen and diversity expert suggests, "businesses overall have been slow to embrace diversity. In TV, diversity does not mean just putting more people of color in a sitcom, but having people of color as decision-makers as well.
"When people have diverse experiences and perspectives, those experiences are reflected in a company's product; the product is more reflective of the diversity of the consumer. Lack of diversity could lead to loss of business," says Segal.
Mfume stressed that in the coming months, he will meet with the networks to discuss the issue of diversity in the hopes of making more progress in the area. But he warns, "A boycott remains a possibility but [that] depends on what the networks do vis-a-vis the agreements."
Will a boycott be effective, when and if it comes to that? Visit Monday for part 2 of "It's All About the Images."
